AT THE END OF THE SPECTRA

“How secure is staying inside?…”

Odd Colombian horror that has some good (if slightly derivative) scares but is ultimately let down by its muddled plot. Forgettable…

JAWS

“You’ll never go in the water again…”

Excellent classic thriller that, despite a slightly slower second half, definitely lived up to the hype. Great characters and really good effects for its time.

THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS:

“It’s a plunderful life…”

Aardman animation that fails to stand out in an industry of awesome animated movies. Light on laughs but has decent plot and its fun.

2/6

REAL STEEL

“Champions aren’t born. They’re made…”

Cheesy sci-fi drama about robot boxing that has a real 80’s vibe. Jackman is good but the kid who co-stars is predictably precocious. That said, it’s worth a watch.

CHERNOBYL DIARIES

“Experience the fallout…”

Entertaining (but questionable) horror. Whilst it’s good that the ‘monsters’ aren’t shown much throughout the movie, there is some distinctly sub-par acing, very odd dialogue and the ending was a bit of a let down.

REMOVAL

“If you’re not afraid, if you’re not paranoid, you’re crazy…”

Psychological thriller involving a cleaner’s newest job. Some good acting made it watchable but the plot twists were obvious and more than cliche.

WARNING: The trailer is ridiculously spoiler-ridden (more so than most) so bear this in mind if you’re actually intending to watch the movie!

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS

“Paris after midnight is magic…”

Entertaining Allen time-travel romance that has an interesting message but ultimately fails to make me really care about any of the characters.

4/6

THE AVENGERS

“Some assembly required…”

Near-perfect superhero blockbuster. Every character is perfectly utilised within the narrative. Truly epic and even funnier than you may expect. Made for fans by Wedon, once again proving his title as the master of pop-culture. MUST SEE!

THE ARISTOCATS

“Meet the cats who know where it’s at…”

Disney classic that, whilst entertaining, didn’t make me care enough about the characters; some of which were very irritating.

A LONELY PLACE TO DIE

“Out there, there’s nowhere to hide…”

Sub-par thriller that had its moments but didn’t live up to the expectations I’d had since seeing the trailer at the Toronto After Dark festival. The overall plot seemed extremely muddled in places but Melissa George was a ray of sunshine.

BEST WORST MOVIE

“The story behind the worst movie ever made; Troll 2…”

Less a “behind-the-scenes-making-of” the terrible (but cult-beloved) movie ‘Troll 2’ than an excellent documentary commentary about what happens when the ‘five minutes of fame’ inevitably ends. The actors (or, for the most part, ex-actors) who take part make this film equally hilarious and heartbreaking. MUST SEE!

GHOSTWATCH

“Round and round the garden…”

Brilliant, ground-breaking BBC horror mockumentary. Truly scary, entertaining and well ahead of its time. Only marked down due to some of the acting.

THE RAVEN

“The only one who can stop a serial killer is the man who inspired him…”

Disappointing and obvious thriller about the (fictional) last days of Poe. Even the most minor of twists were easily guessed and even Cusack couldn’t save it. See it nevermore!

MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE

“Do you ever have that feeling were you can’t tell if something’s a memory or if something you dreamed?”

Odd drama-thriller that wouldn’t be half as good without Olsen as the lead. Dark and interesting plot with great acting from the whole cast.

PARANORMAL ENTITY

“Decide the truth for yourself…”

Surprisingly legit Paranormal Activity copy. Almost as good as its namesake, creepy and worth a watch for fans, despite some bad acting from some members of the cast.
